The Malhi Laboratory has made Illinois News for leading anthropological research that studied the DNA of elephant tusks found in a Portuguese shipwreck in 1533, off the coast of Namimbia. The analysis, led by postdoctoral researcher of the Malhi Lab, Alida de Flamingh, and coordinated by Professors Ripan S. Malhi of Anthropology and Alfred Roca of Animal Sciences. 

The fascinating study incorporated DNA analysis and our knowledge of elephant behavior to locate the animals, as well as trace the trade lines of elephant tusks across nations and continents.
