Every summer, about 35,000 to 55,000 farmworkers migrate or transition to agriculture in Illinois. They endure extreme poverty, without access to healthcare, and with no choice about where to live or work. The Agricultural Safety and Health Center in Chicago will be the newest center of about ten in the entire country. It will be made possible through a $6 million grant from the National Institute for Occupational Safety. Dr Linda Forst, professor at UIC School of Public Health will lead the effort, with the help of an interdisciplinary team of collaborators, including Anthropology Assistant Professor Jessica Brinkworth.
