The lecture Structural Racism and Health Inequities: The Case of Roma People in Europe was given by Dr. Margareta (Magda) Matache on April 10, 2025, with the UIUC European Union Center. It explores the different ways anti-Roma racism manifests across Europe and its effects on the lives, well-being, and health of Roma people. Dr. Matache argues that, although these manifestations may seem unrelated, sporadic, or even chaotic at first glance, they form a consistent machinery of structural racism. The lecture was recorded and can be viewed at the link in our bio.

This event was organized by Tuba Akin, PhD Student in Anthropology and Research Assistant at the UIUC European Union Center.

Illinois Anthropologist Dr. Jessica Greenberg, the Acting Director of the European Union Center, provided an introduction to the event alongside Illinois Anthropology PhD student Tuba Akin.
